RESUMO

Using a mixed-methods triangulation approach we piloted the Composite Abuse Scale-Brazilian version (CAS-Brazil) at the House of the Brazilian Woman of Curitiba among 62 survivors of intimate partner violence and four professionals serving survivors to assess its feasibility for use. Quantitative data were tabulated using descriptive statistics while qualitative data were recorded, coded, and thematically analyzed. Four qualitative domains emerged: (a) conceptual understanding; (b) item definitions; (c) women's experiences; and (d) professionals' perspectives. Comprehension of the CAS-Brazil appeared high across participants from diverse backgrounds. Professionals viewed it as highly feasible for use in Brazilian cross-sectoral services to support survivor decision-making.

RESUMO

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a challenge in Brazil; the country is ranked 6th globally for femicide and one in four women experience physical and/or sexual IPV in their lifetimes. Safety decision aids (SDA) are tools for women experiencing IPV. Building upon previously developed and tested online SDA tools, we intend to adapt an SDA tool for use in Brazil. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of a technology-based SDA to support Brazilian women living with IPV, tailored for the Brazilian context. Our participatory-action research approach built upon research between 2018 and 2019 at the House of the Brazilian Woman (HBW) of Curitiba, Brazil, a cross-sectoral one-stop center (OSC) providing comprehensive care for IPV survivors. Field research included observation, field notes, and in-depth interviews with twenty-eight (n = 28) participants (HBW staff and survivors). The results were grouped into four main thematic categories: advantages; uncertainties; barriers; and suggestions. The triangulated results showed that the majority of participants considered the SDA feasible, highlighting flexibility and confidentiality; information about IPV; and access to resources for formal help-seeking as advantages of the tool. Participants also expressed uncertainties about SDA's ability to increase women's safety and its accessibility for the most vulnerable. They made suggestions for improvement to meet the unique needs of Brazilian women. This study provided evidence on the potential of an SDA tailored for use within a comprehensive program of women survivors in Brazil. This step was crucial to inform the future implementation and evaluation.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this mixed-methods triangulation study was to assess the face validity and comprehension of a femicide risk assessment tool, the Danger Assessment-Brazil (DA-Brazil) among women seeking care in a one stop center for abused women in Curitiba, Brazil. Our secondary aim was to assess professionals' perceptions of feasibility for using the DA-Brazil in the same setting. METHOD: Fifty-five women experiencing relationship violence completed the instrument and participated in cognitive interviews about their experience; professionals attending survivors were also interviewed. RESULTS: The vast majority of women described the DA-Brazil instrument as being easy to comprehend (n = 41, 73.2%). Nearly half of participants (n = 26, 46.4%) had some kind of question regarding the DA-Brazil calendar, a tool to visualize abuse frequency and severity. Queries aligned with five categories: recollection of dates, scale, relationship status, terminology, and discomfort. Professionals reported that the DA-Brazil instrument would support referral decision-making. CONCLUSION: The overall face validity and comprehension of the DA-Brazil appears to be high. The majority of challenges were around the calendar activity. Professional perceptions of the DA-Brazil suggest a high degree of feasibility for its use in Brazilian healthcare settings. In order for the DA-Brazil to effectively be administered with facilitated support there is a need for training on the best use of the instrument. Accurate assessment of femicide risk is critical in a country like Brazil with high rates of femicide. The DA-Brazil provides a valid assessment of femicide risk and has the potential to trigger early intervention for those at risk. RESUMO

Extreme or rogue waves are large and unexpected waves appearing with higher probability than predicted by Gaussian statistics. Although their formation is explained by both linear and nonlinear wave propagation, nonlinearity has been considered a necessary ingredient to generate super rogue waves, i.e., an enhanced wave amplification, where the wave amplitudes exceed by far those of ordinary rogue waves. Here we show, experimentally and theoretically, that optical super rogue waves emerge in the simple case of linear light diffraction in one transverse dimension. The underlying physics is a long-range correlation on the random initial phases of the light waves. When subgroups of random phases appear recurrently along the spatial phase distribution, a more ordered phase structure greatly increases the probability of constructive interference to generate super rogue events (non-Gaussian statistics with superlong tails). Our results consist in a significant advance in the understanding of extreme waves formation by linear superposition of random waves, with applications in a large variety of wave systems.

RESUMO

The KPC K-SeT immunochromatographic test (Coris BioConcept®, Gembloux, Belgium) has been widely used for detection of KPC in Enterobacteriaceae with reported sensitivities and specificities of 100%. However, to our knowledge, there are no reports of its use in KPC-positive Pseudomonas species. We evaluated the KPC K-SeT test in 36 clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae (21 KPC-positive and 15 KPC-negative) and 20 Pseudomonas species (5 KPC-positive and 15 KPC-negative) using conventional PCR for carbapenemase genes as the reference method. The KPC K-SeT test detected 25 out of 26 KPC-positive isolates (96.1%). The undetected isolate was 1 P. aeruginosa bearing the mutation D179Y in the omega loop region of KPC-2 carbapenemase. This mutation was already reported in Enterobacteriaceae as conferring resistance to ceftazidime-avibactam. To our knowledge, this is the first report of evaluation of KPC K-SeT test in KPC-positive P. aeruginosa isolates.

ABSTRACT: Nowadays, a dental implant is considered a good alternative to replace the missing teeth. However, there are several requirements needed for the implant placements and for a good resolution. Present studies demonstrate that the immediate implant placement posterior to the extraction of the tooth obtains better long-term results and also preserves the natural alveolar socket. This facilitates the placement and correct adjustment of the dental implant, only if the extraction is done atraumatically and without complications. Therefore, the present case reports a 73-year-old male patient with arterial hypertension and type II diabetes mellitus background, controlled by his medical doctor. An atraumatic tooth extraction of OD#46 was carried out on this patient, with immediate dental implant NORMON HI placement and insertion of xenograft bone BIO-GEN in order to ensure correct osseointegration. This procedure was done without complications and with correct position and parallelism.

RESUMO

We introduce a simple and flexible method to generate spatially non-Markovian light with tunable coherence properties in one and two dimensions. The unusual behavior of this light is demonstrated experimentally by probing the far field and by recording its diffraction pattern after a double slit: In both cases we observe, instead of a central intensity maximum, a line- or cross-shaped dark region, whose width and profile depend on the non-Markovian coherence properties. Because these properties can be controlled and easily reproduced in experiment, the presented approach lends itself to serving as a test bed to study and gain a deeper understanding of non-Markovian processes.

RESUMO

There is an undeniable concern among the elderly about the mental changes they experience as they grow older. In general, the elderly tend to regard mental deterioration as a pathological condition, however these changes should be considered inherent in the aging process and in the last few years cognitive stimulation programs have been developed in order to address these concerns among the elderly. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of a cognitive training program on 53 subjects with age-related memory loss. The results of cognitive performance have been compared with a control group consisting of 51 subjects with no cognitive training. Moreover, this research analyses the relationship between cognitive changes and the variation in the perceived quality of life of the elderly people in both groups. The results show significant changes in the test group, demonstrating improved cognitive performance and quality of life perception.

Metabolic Syndrome can be defined as an association of cardiovascular risk factors. Along with recent studies, an intervention can be successful in patients with MS if lifestyle is changed, improving this way biochemical markers and biophysical pattern. Being very importantpsychological and educational factors in MS development as well as in therapy compliance, it's possible that an intervention involvingdomestic environment could positively influence treatment proceedings. This way, a periodic homecare program of 6 months was plannedfor a group of MS patients, studying the intervention effects on cardiovascular risk factors. The aims of this study were: 1) Comparing thebiochemical and biophysical patterns, before and after homecare intervention, in a group of patients affected with Metabolic Syndrome; 2)Comparing the evolution of biochemical markers and biophysical parameters of Homecare Group (HG) with those of a sex and age matchedgroup of MS patients without homecare; 3) Elaborating a homecare program for SM Patients. We studied 50 ambulatory patients affectedwith MS followed at Emilio Carlos Hospital of Catanduva School of Medicine. They were randomly divided in 2 groups: homecare (HG) andcontrol group (CG). The HG patients received a monthly homecare educational program during 6 months. All patients received monthlygroup orientation at the hospital...
